I'm a philosopher specialising in philosophy of mind and cognitive science. My career-long goal is to understand the nature of mental representation and computation and their relationship to intentionality.
Currently, I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the Minimal Intelligence Lab (MINT Lab) at the Universidad de Murcia. My research focuses on non-neural cognition, and how we should explain apparent forms of intelligence in non-animal forms of life, such as plants. I recently completed my Doctoral studies in Philosophy at the University of Sussex under the supervision of Prof Sarah Sawyer and Dr Ron Chrisley. My doctoral thesis examined the explanatory role of representation in cognitive science. I argued that many of the problems associated with representation dissipate when we situate them within a mechanistic model of explanation in cognitive science. Other areas of philosophical interest include conciousness (particularly 'illusionism' and associated theories of phenomenological consciousness), philosophy of biology (particularly systems biology), and philosophy of art (particularly film). Beyond philosophy, I have an interest in film-making, martial arts, and tabletop games. I enjoy short story writing, especially science fiction, horror and other forms of imaginative fiction well-suited to philosophical themes. |
